Nuts and Seeds:  The Healthy Benefits

Getting the facts straight:

1. By adding these little gems to your diet, it is highly recommended you do further reading and talk to you doctor about allergies before experimenting with the many varieties of nuts and seeds.

2.  Yes, they are high in calories BUT they also pack a lot of protein and fats that are heart healthy. 

3. They have great weight loss benefits and contain essential vitamins.  

NUTS

  1.  Almonds

–        high fat food that is actually good for your health

–        Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health promoting fats as found in olive oil, which have been associated with reducing risk of heart disease  

–        Even though almonds were considered too fatty to be a healthy snack, research has shown that almonds are actually great for lowering blood cholesterol levels. 

–        Almonds are high in protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin E and other antioxidants. 

–        The high level of magnesium in almonds has a very positive effect on our arteries and veins and helps to improve the overall flow of nutrients through our bodies

–        Almonds help prevent osteoporosis and they regulate blood pressure and regulate sugar levels in the blood after a heavy meal.

2.      Walnuts

–        Rich in fiber, B vitamins, magnesium and antioxidants such as vitamin E.

–        Walnuts have significantly higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids as compared to other nuts

–        Walnuts have also been shown to aid in lowering LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol)

–        The omega-3 essential fatty acids in walnuts also provide anti-inflammatory benefits and are helpful if you suffer from asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema or psoriasis. 

3.      Pecans

–        Have more antioxidant capacity than any other nut

–        The antioxidants in pecans help fight free radical damage and may decrease the risk of developing diseases such as heart disease and certain cancers

–        Pecans are a good source of many vitamins and minerals

–        The nutrients found in pecans include thiamine, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, copper, manganese, vitamin E

–        Pecans also contain vitamin C, vitamin K, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid, calcium, potassium and selenium

–        Pecans are also a good source of fiber and contain a small amount of omega 3 fatty acids

4.      Hazel nuts

–        Hazelnuts are an excellent source of poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats that help protect heart health

–        Hazelnuts are known for their high concentration of oleic acid – the same type of “good” fat that gives olive oil its beneficial properties

–        Oleic acid has been shown to lower levels of LDL (the bad cholesterol) and raise HDL’s (the good cholesterol)

–        This makes these tasty nuts a heart healthy, satisfying choice for snacking

–        Hazelnuts are an excellent source of vitamin E as well as the B vitamins

–        They are also a good source of potassium, calcium and magnesium which help to maintain a healthy blood pressure

–        A cup of hazelnuts supplies a third of the daily iron requirements

 5.      Cashews

–        Cashew nuts have a high content of mono-unsaturated fats, copper and magnesium

–        Cashew contains healthy mono-unsaturated fat that promotes good cardiovascular health, because mono-unsaturated fats reduce high triglyceride levels which are associated with increased risk for heart disease

–        Cashew nut consumption helps the body utilize iron, eliminate free radicals, develop bone and connective tissue

 6.      Coconut

–         Coconut is a tropical fruit that is rich in protein.  The meat of the coconut is very good in destroying intestinal parasites, that we get from eating infected food

–        Coconut water is food for kidney and urinary bladder problems

–        Good body builder so it is a food recommended for building up the body muscles

–        Coconut increases the metabolic rate of the body, which means that energy is consumed faster and excess body weight is burned off

1.      Pumpkin Seeds
